Sometimes I wonder; Do I paint my own retina to fall asleep - and wake up - to...?

"When the soul wishes to experience something she throws an image of the experience out before her and enters into her own image."

First Solo Exhibition in Belgium

October 9th - October 31st - 2010
SLIDE PRESENTATION:

Art Prints

ENCOUNTERS....

This exhibition shows a series of paintings created during a period of for me an important Transition;
Before, during – and after - arriving in Belgium.

For most of my life my home has been near the shore of the Hardanger fjord, in Western Norway.
After eight years in America, 7 of these studying art - and as a conclusion receiving my Master of Fine Arts degree at Pratt Institute, New York – I moved back to my family roots; painting, writing, teaching art – and searching the shores - for the next 20 + years;
- Dreaming...

From early childhood my strongest memories seem to all be visual; Images on walls and in books opened Magical doors and windows to me; I was an only child, left mostly to myself (my parents were young).
And, of course, Nature was always there -

This combination/background has given me the inspiration to create – paint and write - ever since;
It has been my way to search and connect to the world I live in;
- In an evolving visual language;

My paintings are still really all about my 'childhood eyes' seeing and experiencing this 'strange', at times scary - yet wonderful - Life; - Still believing in fairytales and stories, still wondering and pondering; My Encounters....

I sometimes think of my paintings as 'foretelling' and 'remembering'.
And sometimes I think 'Perhaps I am painting my own retina; To fall asleep with, and wake up to'....?
Or, as in a quote I found one day many years ago:
"When the soul wishes to experience something she throws an image of the experience out before her and enters into her own image." (Meister Eckhart)

My painting is about Who I Am; - What I see and experience, what I feel along the way – inspired by a long line of others painters/artists living before me - and alongside me - and all the stories; real, dreamed, imagined, and remembered; in a Visual language;

Liminal' has been a theme for me for a long time;
This indefinable space between here and there;Between Dream and Waking Reality;
This 'Meantime' is magical,
A place where one can wander in and out of open doors,
Dream and reality are no longer separate;,
Time is suspended,
The clock ceases to tick.

SO - WHAT HAPPENED?
After 20 years searching the shores; for remnants of a world outside
Message in a bottle?
How strange – how wonderful – how puzzling -

My friends have told me 'You painted your way to Belgium'
- Perhaps I did?

RECONTRES ...

When the soul wishes to experience something she throws an image of the experience out before her and enters into her own image )

“Liminal” a été un thème récurrent pour moi depuis très longtemps;
Cet espace indéfinissable et magique entre Ici et Ailleurs, entre Rêve et Réalité;

Winner of BEST IN PAINTING! Manhattan Arts Juried Gallery

Tone Aanderaa is very happy to see 2 of her paintings winning the Award of
'BEST IN PAINTING'
by Manhattan Arts Juried Gallery
Celebrating 'The Healing Power of Art'
“When the soul wishes to experience something she throws an image of the experience out before her and enters into her own image.” (Meister Eckhart) "
To me this quote serves as the best statement for what this journey of art and living is to me; Painting is a means to look, question, wonder, and search – and express it. Painting has remained my friend and constant companion - my healer - through losses and painful experiences. Through painting I attempt to communicate the sense of magic and wonder I feel – despite all - and the 'song' of this soul's journey." Belgium
'Flying Tree' - Oil on canvas, 100 cm x 80 cm)
A tree uprooted, flying, taking only the essentials with - and dancing off to a new life, a new place.

'The Girl on the Train' (Oil on canvas, 70 cm x 60 cm)

My big teenage hero was Magritte; and many years ago I made a small sculpture inspired by one of Magritte's paintings - I just recently found this again, and realized this little man I had sculpted so many years ago had a perfect likeness to the man I am about to marry:) - I was so thrilled! And this painting came as a result; (for those who are familiar with Magritte, I'm sure I don't need to point to the man in the painting:)

Both paintings will be shown in the exhibition:
"Tone Aanderaa, Une peintre Norvégienne qui rêve en Brabant Wallon"
May 29 - 30/2010
@ "Jadis et Naguère", Rue J.Boulanger 32, 1350 Noduwez, Belgium

To my Friend Jeff

"Just Another Song

The wind is blind, the lights are blurred
Long lost his Queen of love
Alone with words and broken rhymes
Is what his life's made of

He used to hear the music
But now it plays no more
He used to feel his muse wind
But now his sails are ripped and torn

There comes a time to broken men
A calling clear and strong
to cast a drift, abandon ship
Into choose to another song

He used to hear the music,
But, now it plays no more
So tonight he chose to ramble on
Into another song

Where he can hear that music
It's playing all day long
So, no one should be crying
'Cause, it's just another song

He lived and loved, laughed and lost
At least a thousand times
His dog-eared poems
Once lost now found
As life ain't just or kind
His dog-eared poems
That no one knows
Is all he left behind"

(Jeffrey Wasserman, from his CD 'Jeffrey and the Free Radikals')

Jeff's music, friendship, and history, means a lot to me - has for a long time -
this is my little gift back - to all his wonderful music and songwriting through the years!
